Negative self-talk can have serious consequences. Not only does it fail to instill positivity, but it can also lead to limited thinking and perfectionism. Studies have shown that positive self-talk is a strong predictor of success, especially in athletes. When people are told that they’re doing great and others have noticed, they are motivated to continue performing well. Negative self-talk can lead to feelings of depression and cause relationship challenges. People who constantly criticize themselves may come across as insecure and needy, or their negative habits can bother others. It’s important to recognize negative self-talk and take steps to replace it with positive self-talk.
